Last month’s black out left many of us scrambling around the house in the dark looking for candles, propane, extra blankets and a number of other supplies that we all should have on hand. August 13, 2013 - Your Child's First Visit to the Dentist
Parents of toddlers naturally have many questions on how to maintain their child's optimum health. When to take your child for her first dental visit is usually one of those times. Fortunately, there are a few simple yet important steps you can do put your toddler on the path to a positive life-long relationship with her dental team and excellent dental health.
Your child's baby teeth play an important role in her long-term dental health so you need to treat the care, function and proper development of baby teeth just as you would adult teeth. Scheduling your child's first dental visit at around the age of two will start her on the right path. However, if your child has complained of pain or you see discolouration of the teeth, then you should make an appointment with your dentist to have your child examined right away.
The most important outcome for your child's first dental visit is that she has a positive and warm experience with her dental team. You do not want your child to connect visiting the dentist with pain or discomfort, which could lead them to avoid dentists and their own dental care in the future. To help your child to bond with her dental team, help to prepare her for the visit. You can put the date on the calendar, treat it like an important event, and explain to your child what she can expect. Don't forget to write down any questions that you might have as well.
A typical first visit is really a chance to introduce your child to the office and to screen for any dental problems. Try to arrive a bit early to give your child a chance to play in the waiting room and get comfortable. When it is time for the appointment you will help her to meet her new dental care team including her hygienist and her dentist.
Of course, the flow of your child's first dental visit will depend on how well she takes to the office and the staff. Your child will not be rushed through. The staff will move at her pace so that your child is comfortable each step of the way.
The actual visit will include sitting in the big chair. The hygienist will show her the instruments, then count her teeth and polish them to a sparkle. If there is a risk of tooth decay, your child might have fluoride applied as a rinse, painted on or applied, and x-rays may be ordered. Next comes a visit from the dentist who will look over your child's teeth. Once the screening is over, your dental hygienist will give your child some important information on how to take care of her teeth and a kit to help with her own dental care routine at home. Your child will then pick a prize and the visit is over.
You can then take your child home knowing that your child's first dental visit was a success and that you have set your toddler on the path to life-long dental health and a winning smile.
